TEVA Guatemala Trip

The Texas Equine Veterinary Association sent a volunteer team of nine people to Guatemala for a second TEVA sponsored Equitarian Initiative trip. The trip was headed up by FullBucket Cofounder Dr. Rob Franklin. Members of the Guatemalan Equitarian project assembled in Dallas on Saturday February 23, before flying together to Guatemala City. The group was a mixture of veterinarians, vet students and volunteers. The four volunteer veterinarians were - Chris Brasmer, Tammy Vretis, Kent Arnold and Rob Franklin; two 4th year veterinary students from Texas A&M -Kim Aeschlimann and Scott Fleming; an industry representative from MWI - Ed Strickland;  and two volunteers - Kristie Strickland and Laurie Franklin to work with the children.

Chimaltenango was our destination today. Our initial work site created some consternation when the team van became mired in the washed out section of road and no horses were waiting for us. After both the Equitarians and farriers joined in pushing, the van was freed.

Although today was cloudy and intermittently rainy, we ended the day in high spirits after providing health care to 80 horses in the village of Zaragoza. Our work site was an empty lot where WHW farrier student Jaime Perez had organized a small canopy to shelter our table with supplies as well as two posts with a cross bar to serve as our dental station.

Rob & Keith in Guatemala Day 3

Full Bucket BlogOur morning began with coffee on the roof terrace looking out over church cupolas, mist and mountains. After breakfast, we returned to the village of San Andres Itzapa and were welcomed by the sight of over 30 working horses awaiting us on and around the soccer (futbol) field. We quickly unloaded our gear and got to work.

Equitarian Trip Guatemala Day 1

We have had a quiet first day here in Antigua, Guatemala. This is the view from the 3rd floor of our little hotel. This is the Volcan de Agua, which is not active. The Volcan de Fuego, the active one, is just as close and beautiful as the this one, spewing smoke this morning.

Our first working day in the hilly village of San Andres Itzapa was exciting and successful. The American Equitarians are partnering with World Horse Welfare's farriers and saddlers, who are meeting critical needs for improved shoeing and pack saddle padding on the horses in this area.
