A Visit with Harnessing Hope

Aug 5, 2015 1:06:18 PM

FullBucket sat down with Hillary to discuss her passion for helping people and horses, and what she’s learned about both in the 11 years since she started her organization.

"All of our horses are rescue horses that are unwanted or neglected and abused.  ...the ones that have pasts of abuse, we’ve found that clients who have had similar pasts of abuse or neglect join up with those horses or those horses join up with them. And you just start to see the healing start. It’s incredible."

Equitarian Initiative in Peru

Aug 11, 2013 11:38:32 AM

Full Bucket BlogTravelers met from all over in Houston and Lima to begin our trip to Peru. As somewhat expected, customs in Lima took a long time to pass through. Maria Teresa, our coordinator from the non-profit VidaDigna, helps us with permits, and we generally have a good working relationship with the customs officials at SENASA because of the trip’s long-time in-country presence.

It took us at least 5 hours to have all of our boxes inspected, which had been shipped to various trip participants prior to the trip to check as extra baggage. Everything cleared, but it seemed to have warranted double- and triple-inspection and communication with a superior over the phone.

We arrived late at the hotel in Las Galeras, a small town east of Samana to find the SA team just finishing dinner after a very long first day. We were pretty tired as well after our all day clinical skills lab and lectures and an unexpectedly long drive. But we were all ready to go this morning and the project didn't disappoint. We had to load our inventory into the two trucks, trade supplies with Small Animal (2 bottles of LA Xylazine to us for a large pack of catheters and drapes to them).

El Valle, a small cluster of rural houses and fincas is served by a road the went from wide and paved to slick, steep red clay and a 12% grade that ended, literally in a river, as the bridge was still not finished (I have pictures from 15 years ago). The communities are mainly clustered along the road which ultimately, if you are intrepid enough, leads to a spectacular, secluded beach on the North side of the peninsula. Ending there was the incentive to work hard and wade through the 15 or so castrations and the 40 more desparasitantes.

Equitarian Initiative in Haiti

Haiti Project 2013 – Report from Dr. Jay Merriam
The plan was originally proposed as an assessment of working equid health status in the region around Port-au-Prince with special interest in saddle and pack sores.  This has morphed into an Equitarian Workshop with 6 Haitian vets and “vet agents” as well as several techs and helpers.  World Horse Welfare’s director Liam McGuire and master Saddler Matthew Pence are assisting us.  Our host organization is HSI who also provides translators, medications and logistical support of drivers and translators.  And boy did we need them today, Day 1 of 5 as we hit the road.

Equitarian Initiative Costa Rica

Mar 20, 2013 9:47:31 AM

Dazzling yellow flowers on ‘Cortez Amarillo’ trees dotted the landscape for the first few hours of our drive over winding mountain roads. As we approached the lowlands, we enjoyed a short break at the Rio Tarcoles. From our vantage point on the bridge, we counted some twenty something salt water crocodiles, some clearly more than six meters in length.

The second part of our journey was along the South Pacific coast, past Dominical, a surfers’ paradise, with black sand beaches and crystal clear surf, where we stopped for a late lunch. This coast is also well-known for one of the largest marine reserves in the Americas.

Professional Equine Therapeutic Services.
When did you first decide to become a veterinarian? "When I was 10-years old my horse was diagnosed with cancer. As he was my best friend and all I could do was watch him decline, I decided that I wanted to become a veterinarian so that I could cure cancer and nobody would have to lose their best friend. :-) I was 10..."

Giving in The Mountains of Mexico

Nov 12, 2012 5:45:11 PM

One year ago this month we embarked on a journey together (you and FullBucket, whether you know it or not). We took a perfectly good, growing nutritional supplement company and blew it up. Relaunching in February with purpose and understanding – Do Good and Be Good. There are 90+ Million working equids globally. Most of them coping with degrees of malnutrition and an over demanding daily grind.

Tlaxcala, Mexico Day 4

Oct 24, 2012 5:43:54 PM

Our day started at 6:15 at the “Hotel Juvenile”.  My roommates and I got ready and organized for another day of lectures and fieldwork. After a breakfast of coffee and pancakes our team headed to the CATED center for morning lectures. Dr. Rob Franklin with FullBucket Animal Health did a very apt presentation on burro nutrition, which clearly illustrated to me how these donkeys are able to survive on so little sustenance.  Burros’ energy requirements are only 75% that of horses, they require more fiber and are more efficient cellulose fermenters.  He addressed some of the issues facing these little burros that we have all been observing over the last few days.
